GREEN LAKE REST AREA

Public BBQ

Green Lake Rest Area offers a welcome respite along the highway, where a surprisingly large lake spreads out beneath the Grampians backdrop. The sandy beach and shaded trees create an unexpectedly pleasant atmosphere for a roadside stop, though swimming is discouraged due to algae warnings. Clean toilet facilities and picnic tables cater to travellers needing a leg-stretch, while the boat ramp attracts fishing and paddle boarding enthusiasts. The lake breeze provides genuine relief during warmer journeys, and the reserve's well-maintained grounds belie its proximity to the road. Local volunteers occasionally offer free drinks on long weekends, adding a hospitable touch to what could otherwise be just another functional rest stop. While the lack of camping facilities disappoints some visitors, the combination of practical amenities and genuinely relaxing lake views makes this a worthwhile pause for anyone traversing the Western Highway.
